Vila Praia de Âncora: a perfect stop on the Caminho da Costa
Vila Praia de Âncora sits right on the Portuguese Coastal Camino between Viana do Castelo and Caminha, a short hop from the Spanish border at A Guarda. It is one of the most enjoyable stages of the whole route: a real beach town with a long sandy shoreline, a small harbour, cafés and restaurants, and its own railway station on the Porto–Valença line.
Typical walking distances from Vila Praia de Âncora:
- Viana do Castelo → Vila Praia de Âncora: about 18 km (the previous stage)
- Vila Praia de Âncora → Caminha: about 14 km
- Caminha → A Guarda, Spain: the next stage, via the Minho river ferry
- Santiago de Compostela: roughly 5–6 walking days further north
Ideal for Way of St. James pilgrims and cyclists
Arriving on foot or by bike, you’ll appreciate hosts who understand the rhythm of the Camino — an early start, a place to charge and dry your gear, and a good night’s rest. Stay one night or take a rest day to enjoy the beach, and you’ll set off refreshed for Caminha, the Minho ferry and the final push to Santiago.
